Gabrielle P. Flores, Φ2017, Class 2021
Last September 26, 2017, the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority and the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity brought ‘Kabanata para sa Kabataan’, a storytelling event, to the Cancer Institute of the Philippine General Hospital. The event was hosted by Gabriel Paulo Candongo Orosco (Phi 2017A) and Alyssa Louise Aquino Uy (Phi 2017).
At ‘Kabanata para sa Kabataan’, the brods and sisses brought the story of superhero Sinag, played by Manuel Angelo Terania Griño, Ф2017A, and brothers Prince Peter, played by Safrollah Muti Guinal Ф2017A and Prince John, played by Jeune Keith Galicia Mabanag Ф2017A, to the pediatric patients of the Institute through a short skit and games. Sinag, the Filipino word for “ray” or “beam”, shone as a beacon of hope and optimism for the patients struggling with the plethora of problems that a chronic illness can bring. Through this skit, Sinag, Prince Peter, and Prince John aimed to show the room full of patients that their diseases do not define them, and that a little hope can go a very long way.
In addition to the skit, games, and giveaways that the patients enjoyed, the parents and caregivers were also given an informative and inspiration talk on how to be a caregiver of children with chronic illnesses by Angelita A. Jaya, R.N., M.D., M.P.H., D.F.M.. The brods and sisses capped of the event by giving away loot bags full of prizes from the event’s sponsors: Chateau 1771, McDonalds, Magnolia, Chocolait, and Fibisco Marie Biscuits.
