PagKalMa Activities

Pagkalinga para sa Kalusugan ng Mamamayan (PagKalMa) is the socio-civic arm of the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority and the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and is the vehicle through which the members use the skills and knowledge acquired in medical school for the benefit of the underserved. It is a venue for the continual education of the residents outside the classroom. It is where the resident sisses learn from the patients and develop the character that will ultimately mold the sisses into well-rounded, respectable and trustworthy doctors.

The PagKalMa was founded in early 1979 as a response to the growing desire of the members of the sorority and the fraternity to reach out to those in need. Since then, the brods and sisses have organized various projects under PagKalMa, coordinating with barangay captains from different communities, and visiting the barrios in the weekends. Today, the tradition of service continues with the numerous medical and summer surgical missions undertaken within the Philippines.

Medical-Dental-Surgical Mission              .

The sorority frequently sponsors free medical (check-up), surgical (circumcision), and dental (check-up and tooth extraction) services for the underserved at various regions in the country. Medical students also benefit from these experiences as they are able to witness true community-oriented medicine in action.

Caritas Month                                        .

Every year, the sorority holds a week-long celebration wherein services are extended to different sectors of the PGH community. Activities such as blood-letting, basic life support training program, storytelling in the pediatrics wards, art session in the Cancer Institute, exercise activities with geriatric patients, and free BP taking are some of the activities done yearly. This 2011, however, it was a month-long event and included projects such as the revived Ventriculoperitoneal Shunts donations and gardening at the Sinagtala Home for the Boys.

Kids of Tomorrow                                      .

In line with the sorority's aim to help empower kids and create a lasting mark in their lives, the sorority along with the Linangan ng Kababaihan Inc. (Likhaan Inc.), has executed a Health Education program for the children from Likhaan Inc.’s adopted communities called Kids of Tomorrow. This is a monthly Saturday activity composed of a health-oriented interactive lecture whose aim is provide Filipino children with the appropriate knowledge and skills regarding health to enable them to grow and develop to their full potential. Aside from the tutorials, snacks are given after every session and healthy-child checkups are done bi-annually along with deworming and vitamin supplementations as needed.
