Phi Lambda Delta Activities

PHIsiklaban

PHIsiklaban is the kickoff event of Phi Month. It serves to welcome the newest batch of sisses and brods and gives an opportunity for members young and old to create new bonds and strengthen relationships within Phi. Organized by the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority and the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity, it is an exciting activity where people from different batches band together and compete against other teams in various fun, physically and mentally challenging games. The day is capped off by entertaining performances of the losing team.

Anniversary Mass and Dinner

Every year, the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority sponsors a mass at the PGH Chapel in commemoration of its anniversary. Attended by resident and alumnae sisses, it is followed by a dinner celebration that focuses on past triumphs and present advocacies of the sorority, in its thrust to uphold the mission and vision of a UP doctor.

One Big Phi

One Big Phi is a variety show featuring the different batches of the sorority and the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity, as well as the Phi Band. There are also performances from some of the country's biggest bands. Last November 2010, the crowd pleasers present were Sugarfree, Chilitees and Mike's Apartment. This wonderful show is definitely a great way to jumpstart Phi Month and present the newest batch of sisses and brods to the rest of the community.

Only the Phinest

The community of the Philippine General Hospital gathers together every year at the PGH Atrium in a fun-filled Christmas celebration dubbed ONLY THE PHINEST. OTP is a gift-giving occasion intended for the patients and watchers who are to spend their holidays at the hospital, as well as for the doctors, nurses and staff who are on duty. This three-hour showcase features some of the country's popular performers invited to entertain, games and contests for the audience, and raffle prizes. To end the night, goods and gift packs are distributed to the members of the PGH community – Phi's way of spreading joy and the spirit of Christmas.

Grand Sis Night

Grand Sis Night is the formal induction ball of the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority. It is a celebration of years of sisterhood and is a testament to the strength of our bond, a bond that transcends time and distance. The tradition of excellence lives on, as the newest members of the Phi Lambda Delta will be inducted into the sorority with the entire resident sorority present, as well as alumni sisses and special guests. Nearing 800 members since its founding in 1969, the Phi Lambda Delta has been a bastion of medical excellence in the Philippines, inducting within its ranks many of the very best doctors within and outside the country.

Caroling

Christmas time brings about the spirit of generosity and good cheer in everyone. The Phi Lambda Delta Sorority, together with the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity spreads the spirit of Christmas in the homes of Alumni brods and sisses through caroling. This seasonal event is also a wonderful oppurtunity for the alumni and the resident brods and sisses to get to know each other. Truly, there is no greater celebration of Christmas than through songs in chorus, good food and great stories amidst the people you love.

caritasserineAs doctors and students, we are exposed daily to the needs of the patients in the Philippine General Hospital, and one of the most pressing needs of the patients is the supply of blood units. LIFELINE is a monthly blood drive held in different locations all over Metro Manila aiming to address the Philippine General Hospital’s exigency for blood units. For every unit of blood donated, the Phi Lambda Delta will also donate a book to the Pediatric Ward and Out-Patient Department to support their Reach-out and Read Program.

Various studies have shown that reading to and reaching out to children of various ages helps stimulate their cognitive development. The Phi Lambda Delta Sorority therefore aims to help ease the burden of the children confined in the PGH Pediatric Wards and Cancer Institute through an interactive story-telling and book donation event.

Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Donation

In recognition of the debt we owe to our patients which have taught us over the years, the sorority has established the VP (Ventriculoperitoneal) SHUNTS PROJECT. VP shunting is a surgical procedure done to relieve increased pressure inside the skull due to excess cerebrospinal fluid on the brain seen in patients with hydrocephalus. Hundreds of Filipino children are afflicted with hydrocephaly, most of which cannot afford treatment (P20,000 for the VP Shunt alone). Through this project, we aim to provide VP shunts to some of the indigent patients in the Pediatric and Neurosurgery wards in PGH.

Eligible patients are those either admitted in the Charity wards of the Department of Pediatrics or Neurosurgery of the Philippine General Hospital, below 19 years of age, and withouth the current financial capacity to afford the said operation. The patient or his or her family or physician should submit a copy of the patient’s clinical abstract, duly signed, as well as a copy of certification from the Medical Social Service of the family’s financial capacity.

At present, one VP shunt unit alone would cost approximately P20,000, and a lot of patients in PGH cannot afford such a device. Added to this would be the cost of the actual operation for the VP shunt to be installed into the patient. Through the generosity of various sponsors, we were able to donate four VP shunts last February and another one last April 2011.

Kids Day Out                                                                                                                                                                        .

The Phi Lambda Delta Sorority, in its commitment to service and nation-building, gives focus to the nation’s future through Kids Day Out. In this activity, members of the Sorority take time off from hospital duty to treat children from indigent communities to a day filled with education and fun. It is meant to provide for them an alternative learning experience and to foster camaraderie among the children and the sisses. Making the world their classroom, the Phi sisses share their advocacy of service and excellence to the kids of Baseco through this extraordinary experience.
