Instruments and Equipment

As medical students and future doctors, dissection and physical examination skills are hallmarks of our medical education. Allow us to help you in taking that first step towards becoming a good medical student. Below is a list of things we think will help you go a long way.

To see the complete price list of our instruments, click here.

RECOMMENDED INSTRUMENTS

DISSECTION
Dissection tools may be shared especially if the area being dissected is small and not everyone can actually be involved in the cutting and cleaning. In cases when everyone in the group dissects, it is useful, much faster and more convenient to have your own set of instruments.

« Scalpel blade holder (preferably number 4)

« Scalpel blades

« Toothed tissue forceps

« Kelly clamp

« Oschner/Kocher clamp

« Probe

« Surgical scissors

« Disposable non-sterile gloves (proper size)

« Disposable masks (N95 particulate respirator masks - if extra sensitive to strong smell)

Other must haves:

Soap (to wash your hands after)

Detergent (to clean dissection tools)

Lysol (to disinfect your cadaver)

Petroleum Jelly (to keep the cadaver dry)

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

Year Level III students already meet normal “patients” and do a Physical Examination on them to have an idea of what the normal is. Some modules may include real patients with pathologies. It is best to be armed with the proper instruments to perform the PE properly.

« Stethoscope

Recommended: Littman Stethoscope. This is a good investment because this will be used until you go to the wards. Pick a good one so you don’t miss any sounds.

« Sphygmomanometer

A standard procedure during PE is to get the vitals signs, and that includes blood pressure. You’ll need this but this can also be shared by a group.

« Tongue depressors

« Neurohammer

It is used during the Neurologic Examination. Pick one that is easy to handle.

« Tuning fork

Recommended: 256 Hz. Also used during Neurologic Examination.

« Penlight

Very useful during PE, especially during Neurology and Cardiology PE, so always keep one in hand.

« Tape measure

We hope our recommendations have helped you decide on what to get for the year. If you still haven’t decided or if you’re still confused, feel free to approach any of us, or contact Charvee (09178914881) or Everly (09151882082). Have a fruitful first year!
