Phisiklaban 2011

by Jodie Chuahiong, Phi '11B

Last November 5, 2011, the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority and Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity officially started Phi month with a blast. During this time of the year, the brods and sisses gather round for fun-filled games, good food and great company. Phisiklaban is the first Phi event I attended as a sis. It is an event wherein the newest batch is welcomed by their fellow brods and sisses, and is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get to know each other more.

The participants were divided into four teams – blue, yellow, orange, and purple – for the games. Each team had eight to nine members. The first activity was to make a mascot and a matching cheer. Using cartolinas and crepe paper, the teams transformed one of their members into a mascot dressed in their respective colors. Given only five minutes, all teams were able to prepare and present their mascots and cheers with enthusiasm. The next activity was the Newspaper Dance. The brods and sisses gave it their all as they contorted their bodies and improvised to squeeze into the area occupied by the paper.  The next game was a test of how well everyone knew each other. Using different strategies, the teams excitedly identified the members of the other team. Up next was the food relay, which was one of the most awaited games of Phisiklaban. Without hesitation, four representatives per team ate their assigned food as fast as they could. There were peanut butter and polvoron sandwiches, plates of banana catsup, plates of okra and ampalaya shakes. After the relay, there was Trip to Jerusalem, a staple parlor game - but with a twist. Sisses from each team had to dance around and sit on the brods' laps once the music stopped. The crowd cheered as the two remaining ladies competed their way onto the lap of one brod. The last game of the day was Treasure Hunt. Each team had to find eight puzzle pieces hidden around the trees and bushes in the garden of brod Dennis Sacdalan's (Phi '10) residence, and use all the pieces to form one whole picture. After the activity, the winners were announced, with Team Orange in first place.

After the friendly competition, it was time for dinner. Everyone filled their stomachs with scrumptious finger food and the grilled kebabs and hamburgers prepared by the brods. Despite the initially bad weather, Phisiklaban was definitely a success and I'm sure that all of us went home happy and excited for the rest of Phi Month.
