Phi Live 2011

by Maria Angelia Gamo, Phi '10

In a fast-modernizing world where information technology has become an invaluable factor for improvement, it has become a necessity for the advancement of medicine to employ various machines and computers in order to better serve the sick and others in need. From imaging to surgery, and even simple histology, technology has become a powerful aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Furthermore, the creation of medical databases has enabled quick dissemination of information and easy access to medical records.

Through Phi Live, a partnership of the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority, the first batch of monitors and CPUs to the different departments of the Philippine General Hospital were donated last October 3, 2011. Represented by brod Mark Malaki (Φ ’08B) and sis Maetrix Ocon (Φ ’09), the turnover ceremony was done during the weekly flag assembly at the PGH atrium, in the presence of current PGH director Dr. Jose Gonzales, a Phi Kappa Mu alumnus. Following the success of this turnover, a second ceremony was held last October 21 at the Century Park Hotel Manila, in the presence of Phi Lambda Delta alumna Dr. Heidi Exconde.

While the first batch of donation was contributed to PGH, consisting of seventeen monitors and seventeen CPUs, the second batch was distributed to three municipalities in Romblon. Two personal computers were donated to each municipality: Cajidiocan, under Mayor Festo R. Galeng, Jr; San Fernando, under Mayor Dindo Rios; and Magduang, under Mayor Ibawa Manzala.

Phi Live acknowledges the growing contribution of information technology in the progress of medical knowledge and information. With this, Phi hopes to help different hospitals and far-flung communities follow the trend of medical IT, so that those who seek help can be served better.
