Brunch for a Cause
by Dana Cheska Santos, Phi '11A
Brunch is a portmanteau of breakfast and lunch thought to have originated in Britain in the 19th century. The term was introduced by Mr. Guy Beringer in Hunter’s Weekly followed up in his article “Brunch: A Plea” where he laid out the advantages of having Sunday brunch; that is one can stay up later and drink more on Saturday without having to wake up early the next day for breakfast. In his words, “by eliminating the need to get up early on Sunday, brunch would make life brighter for Saturday night carousers.” Brunch has then been popular all over the world and has evolved through the years. According to William Grimes in his article “At Brunch, The More Bizarre The Better” The strange world of brunch continues to expand, generating bizarre new life forms, embracing flavors and ingredients never before associated with mankind's pre-noon existence. It is now a popular activity for friends and colleagues to gather up and raise funds for various causes.

Last September 18, 2011, the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority hosted a benefit brunch for the Phi Lambda Delta Scholarship Fund, which was called Food for Thought. Held in Chef Jessie at the Rockwell Club, the restaurant was reserved for the event from 10 am to 2 pm. It was well attended by family and friends of sisses, as well as brods. Several alumnae were also present including Dr. Jennifer Ann Mendoza-Wi, Dr. Miriam Joy Cantiller-Calaguas, Dr Catherine Jessica Mercado-Lazaro, Dr. Clarissa Villarama-Cellona, Dr, Beatrice Lourdes Josefina Concepcion, Dr. Maria Isabelle Lorena Pineda, Dr. Geraldine Zamora-Racaza and Dr. Maria Emilia Victoria.
Â
Everyone enjoyed the buffet prepared for us by the chefs at Chef Jessie and most had multiple servings of their favourite food. After most guests had their fill, there was a short program about the history of the scholarship fund of Phi. Past scholars, Dr. Iyay Victoria and Dr. Richel Baclay, also shared their experiences as Phi scholar. The scholarship award was then awarded to Dana Cheska Santos of Class 2015.
Â
We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to our alumnae, all those who donated and everyone who supported this Fund Raising activity. Rest assured that your money will not be put to waste, for you are helping a student fulfil her dreams of becoming a doctor.
