UPCM Library Book Donation

by Everly Ramos, Phi '10

"Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital." - Thomas Jefferson

One can never overemphasize the importance of books in medical education. It is said that Medicine is both a science and an art. The science of it, while also importantly molded by the experience in the clinics, lies on the foundations of basic medical science in which books are undoubtedly the powerful tools.

In this light, the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority, in celebration of its Excellence Week, donated nineteen medical books to the F.B. Herrera Medical Library, UP College of Medicine on September 16, 2011. The book donation is a special project that aims to help in the medical education of the students in the college and further the growth of the library.

Excellence Week 2011 is the first ever week-long celebration of this important sorority core value. It was organized by the Office of the Sister Keeper of the Scrolls led by Marisse Nepomuceno, Phi 2008, Class 2013 and Raisa Fontanilla, Phi 2010, Class 2015 and was headed by Everly Faith Ramos, Phi 2010, Class 2014.

The donation was warmly welcomed by the College Librarian-in-charge, Gina G. Canceran. The books that were donated were in accordance to the request of the librarian, which she deemed as necessary additions to the library collection.

The following were the books donated: McMinn’s Clinical Atlas of Human Anatomy 6th ed., Basic and Clinical Pharmacology by Katzung 11th ed., Bate’s Guide to Physical Examination and History taking 10th ed., Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology 12th ed., Harper’s Illustrated Biochemistry 28th ed., Junquiera’s Basic Histology: Text and Atlas 12th ed., Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease 8th ed., Vaughan and Asbury’s General Ophthalmology 17th ed., Clinical Neuroanatomy 26th ed., Wheater’s Basic Pathology 5th ed., and the Current Diagnosis and TreatmentSeries – Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Sexually Transmitted Disease, Sports Medicine.
