Starting Point

Starting Point: Establishing Your Medical Career
by Mia Dantes, Phi '11A

Medical students, after they graduate and pass the boards, have many different roads to choose from. Among many others are the fields of medical research, social health care and various specializations in medicine. The plenary that was given last September 13, 2011 by Dr. Lora Garcia-Tansengco (Phi 1987, Class 1992) at the Paz Mendoza Building of the UP College of Medicine, dwelt on private practice, specifically on how to establish one and her experiences as a private practitioner.

The event started with an introduction about Dr. Lora Garcia-Tansengco, an obstetrician and gynecologist, that was given by Raisa Fontanilla of Phi ’10. The talk had a very warm and casual mood as Dr. Garcia-Tansecngco started talking about her life as a medical practitioner and setting up her career as a doctor right after passing her boards. She then told the audience about her various experiences that made her decide to put up a private practice.

The sisses and other guests present listened with much interest to the stories told animatedly by the speaker. Dr. Garcia-Tansengco also allowed the audience to ask questions in between her stories, and one of the topics expounded on were the pros and possible hardships and consequences that can be faced in private practices. At the end of the plenary, everyone went home more knowledgeable, especially after being given the chance to ask so many questions about setting up private practices and being answered wisely and coherently. And of course, as one of our core values, service was also brought up and Dr. Garcia-Tansengco shared her thoughts on how to serve other people, whether in private practice or not.
