Phi Launches Caregiver Training at Sinagtala

Spotted! It was June 17, 2010 and the resident sisses were seen gathered at one particular place in Quezon City
So what brings the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority to its adopted community, the Sinag-Tala Home for Boys in Barangay Bahay-Toro, Quezon City on this particular Saturday morning?

This special visit was intended to be a Caregiver Training Program spearheaded by Chekai Jiao (Phi ’08) and Carla Bonifacio (Phi ’09). The objective of the program is to enhance the skills of the caregivers of the disabled men living in Sinag-Tala. These are usually their relatives or volunteers to the home. Ms. Dolly Montaño, a registered nurse and a caregiver who has worked in a nursing home in the United States, was the main speaker for the program and gave lectures both to the caregivers and to the Sinag-Tala residents. Ms. Montaño was a very engaging speaker and she was straight to the point in her lectures, giving the audience opportunities to ask questions and clarifying some of their misconceptions about health practices.

The lectures particularly focused on health and sanitation, hygiene, eating practices, and steps in maintaining the well-being of the residents such as organizing recreational activities for them on a regular basis. Ms. Montaño also gave a demo-return-demo on how to facilitate certain daily activities of the residents, such as bathing them and how to walk with crutches effectively. It was certainly an educational experience for everyone who was there, including the resident sisses who were also part of the audience.

The residents indeed kept asking questions and were very participative, some of them performing in front when an intermission number was called for. The morning’s activities also included physical examination of some residents who had some physical complaints, performed by Ada Yao (Phi ’06) and Nonette Diansuy (Phi ’07).

After a productive and enriching morning, everyone settled down to a salu-salo lunch, with the resident sisses and the Sinag-Tala residents chatting and catching up. What followed after was distribution of bags of toiletries to the residents. It was indeed an eventful morning, one that added meaning and experience to what was a typical hot Saturday morning.
