Olymphia Heats Up The Start of the Schoolyear

With every new batch of UPCM freshmen every year, a new challenge also arises for them: who will be the winning team in the annual competition sponsored by the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and the Phi Lambda Sorority? This yearly event is patterned after The Amazing Race, with the different stations around the campus dealing with common scenarios of medical life, and, of course, with exciting prizes in store for the winning team.

This year, this much-anticipated competition opened on June 15, 2010, with the theme Olymphia: Rise of the Med Champions, and indeed, the different teams had very catchy Greek names, with their own official flags and standard-bearers, to go with the theme. Adrenaline rush kicked in and each team wanted to win the race – G&A Notes for each team member were in store.

After an eventful race, the teams gathered at the Tipunan grounds for a hearty buffet dinner and a special program. The Phi Band performed for the tired and hungry teams and raffle prizes were also handed out, with Littman stethoscopes  as several of the prizes. Competing in teams and eating together as a group certainly harbored a sense of camaraderie among the freshmen – their groupmates would be the faces they would see in most of their future groupings, from anatomy dissection to research. The shared experience makes a great start for the year ahead of them.

To give a little more inspiration to this great start, Dr. Carlo Josemaria Rubio from the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity and Dr. Charlotte Chiong from the Phi Lambda Delta Sorority gave their words of wisdom. It was an interesting way to end the night. The freshmen may have won this race, but the real race – medical school at its core – is just about to begin.
